Bytown Dental Hygiene has been a dream of mine for over 20 years. However, when I graduated in 1994 dental hygienists were not practicing independently. I first began my research in 1995, by contacting a dental hygienist in British Columbia who was paving the way for independent practice.
Over my career I have gained invaluable experience in all aspects of the dental field. I have worked in public health as well as private practice for many years. In 2006 I went back to school to become a restorative dental hygienist, giving me a broader scope of practice. As a restorative dental hygienist I had the opportunity to work with children and adults with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities. I also gained experience working in seniors residences and long term care facilities. My work with the elderly and people with mobility issues has given me the desire to provide accessible, compassionate care.
In 2007 bill 171 passed giving the public direct access to dental hygiene care. With the experience and skills I have gained over the last 22 years, I am ready to take the next step. While taking my restorative program I met a colleague who would inspire me to finally start my independent practice. Lee Ann owns Alternative Dental Hygiene in Brockville, Ontario and has given me a wealth of support. For the last four years I have been and will continue working as a restorative dental hygienist with Dr. Rahimkhani in Kemptville, Ontario. He as well will be a mentor for me as I follow my dream.
It is my mission to provide accessible, affordable and compassionate care to everyone and I will make it a priority to sit and talk and get to know you.
My son plays competitive hockey and his team mates with store bought sports guards constantly have them out of their mouth. They do this because they are not comfortable and they cannot talk. Custom sports guards fit exactly to your mouth. They help to prevent concussions and help prevent precious teeth from being broken a simple impression of your mouth is taken and you will have your guard within days.
What is an independent dental hygienist? In September 2007, Bill 171 passed. This bill permits dental hygienists in good standing with the College Of Dental Hygienist of Ontario (CDHO)and who have been authorized to self initiate to practice independently from dentists. This means we can open our won practice or bring our service to you.
Why chose a dental hygienist with a mobile practice? As a mobile dental hygiene service I will give you the convenience of coming to your home, seniors residence, or place of employment. Your time is valuable to me. I will provide you with ethical, high quality preventative hygiene care.
What happens my first appointment? We will go over your medical and dental history. Charting of existing teeth and fillings will be completed. I will ask you questions pertaining to your health care regime at home and address any of your concerns. I will perform a thorough examination of your mouth, head and neck. My aim will be to make your first visit experience as comfortable as possible.
Is your services recognized by my insurance company? Yes, we follow the ODHA fee guidelines and dental insurance companies recognize and reimburse clients for services provided. I will be happy to assist you in filling out the forms. I use a standard dental hygiene claim form provided by the Ontario Dental Hygienist Association.
What happens if I have a cavity? I work with dentists in the community and will refer you if I see any obvious cavities, it is advised you see your dentist for your exam and xrays at least once a year. If you do not have a dentist I can help you to choose a dentist in a convenient location for you.
Will you be able to refer me to a dentist? Yes, Bytown Dental Hygiene collaborates with other health care professionals to ensure that you have the most thorough care.
WHAT IS IST?
Frequently people loose fillings or break teeth and are in severe pain. IST is a Glass Ionomer based fluoride releasing filling used as therapeutic intervention.
It is an invaluable service in that the filling will relieve pain and prevent further breakdown of the tooth until the person is able to get to a dentist. This type of filling can last for years.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE?
CDHO guidelines states temporary restorations may be placed in either primary or permanent teeth as a preventative measure when:
-access to a permanent restoration is not immediate or practical
-there is a reasonable risk of further damage to the tooth structure
-the pulp is not exposed
-the client is in discomfort or is experiencing difficulty in eating
-the discomfort is due to recent trauma, fracture, or lost dental restoration
-the client has not received any medical/dental advice that would contraindicate placing a temporary restoration
-the client consents to treatment and it is in the clients’ best interest to proceed
-there are no medical contraindications to the restorative material
The client must be informed that the filling is temporary and refer to a dentist.
Countless times I have been providing dental hygiene services to clients in long term care facilities with severely broken teeth or lost fillings and this type of temporary filling would have greatly benefitted them. As you do not need a needle, it is a non-invasive, painless, inexpensive procedure. The fee for a single IST temporary filling is $56.39
WHY PROVIDE A MOBILE SERVICE?
FEAR, Is one of the most concerns I address daily. Anxiety is greatly reduced in the comfort of your own home.
ACCESSIBILITY, I want my service to provide accessibility for everyone. Those with mobility issues, busy parents with time constraints or seniors living in residences and cannot get to the dentist office.
CONVENIENCE, If you cannot schedule time to come to the office, I can come to you, saving you valuable time and money.
WHAT IS AN ORAL ASSESSMENT?
The initial visit we will go over your medical and dental history. This information helps me to gather valuable information to determine if care can be provided. You can tell me about yourself and your past experiences. We will address any concerns you have about your care. The oral assessment involves a thorough examination of your mouth, head and neck. Charting of existing teeth and fillings would also be completed. All of the information gathered will let us formulate a treatment plan for you. You will be part of the decision making process. You may find some of the questions not pertinent during this initial data gathering, however, each question helps me to gather knowledge about your oral health.
For example, I may ask if you suffer from heart burn or acid reflux?
Prolonged periods of elevated acidity in your mouth caused by acid indigestion or acidic foods can cause severe erosion of your enamel. This can cause extremely sensitive teeth and eventually can destroy your teeth. This would be part of treatment and prevention.
WHY HAVE AN ORAL CANCER SCREENING (OCS)?
Oral cancer is the 13th most common and fastest growing type of cancer. This is part of the Oral Assessment and is crucial in detecting oral cancer early. Orl cancer is on the rise, especially among youth.
Who is at risk? EVERYONE
Some risk factors that increase your risk are:
-smoking and chewing tobacco
-excessive alcohol consumption
-HPV virus infection (a risk that is rising among young adults)
-sun exposure to lips (including lights from tanning beds)
What should I look for?
This fact sheet from the Ontario Dental Hygienists Association is very helpful
WHY HAVE MY TEETH CLEANED?
A white sticky substance (bacterial plaque) begins to accumulate on our teeth. It collects at the gum line. Eventually, plaque hardens on your teeth into calcium deposits called tarter(calculus) If left to develop the bacterial plaque causes inflammation of our gums(gingivitis) and over a long period of time it destroys the underlying bone(periodontal disease). Most people are unaware they have gum disease as it is usually painless.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Red swollen or tender gums
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Receding gums
- Deep pockets
- Bad taste in your mouth
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Risk factors for gum disease- smoking, and smokeless tobacco
- Ineffective brushing and flossing
- Poor nutrition
Studies have linked the bacteria in our mouths to our overall health. Risks of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke are elevated with poor oral health
WHAT IS POLISHING AND WHY DO WE DO IT?
Polishing is the mechanical removal of bacterial plaque and stains caused from extrinsic factors such as coffee, tea, smoking, red wine.
WHO BENEFITS FROM FLUORIDE?
Fluoride is beneficial for most individuals. It is an important part in the fight against tooth decay. Fluoride varnish is now recommended for babies as their teeth erupt.
Fluoride also plays a role in reducing teeth sensitivity. It helps strengthen and remineralize tooth structure.
Oraqix is a needle free, pain reliever (topically applied)
This is one of the most valuable tools dental hygienists use to make your debridement less painful. It is injected below the gum, providing instant relief to sensitivity during treatment.
WHY PROFESSIONAL WHITENING?
Not everyone will benefit from whitening and this is part of the dental assessment process. I would not encourage you to spend your hard earned money on a service that you may not be a successful candidate for treatment. If we proceed with treatment an impression of your mouth will be taken and I will provide you with custom whitening trays. The exact fit will help you to achieve safe and effective whitening. I will monitor your treatment progress and modify use as you go.
WHAT ARE SEALANTS?
A sealant is a strong, plastic, coating which is clear or tooth coloured. It is applied in back teeth where the deep pits and fissures develop. The sealant makes the surface smooth so food and plaque does not trap in the deep grooves. Sealants are a quick and painless procedure and are greatly beneficial to prevent tooth decay in children and teens.
WHY DO WE HAVE A SPECIAL SECTION FOR SENIOR CARE?
More and more seniors are keeping their natural teeth. Care should not stop when you get older. It is more important than ever to take good care of your mouth, whether you have natural teeth, or wear partial/full dentures. Oral disease and pain can negatively impact our ability to speak, chew and eat nutritiously, all of which can lead to a decline in overall health.
Seniors are especially at risk for developing xerostomia (dry mouth). Early detection of potential underlying causes is crucial.
Causes of dry mouth can include but is not limited to:
-high blood pressure
As a dental hygienist, I am trained to know what signs to look for before it becomes a serious problem. I will formulate a treatment plan tailored for your dry mouth. I can make recommendations and discuss which product might work best for you as I know it can be overwhelming to choose.
As we know poor oral health can put a strain on our overall health. Studies are linking the bacteria in our mouth systemically to diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Many people have dexterity issues and simply cannot perform regular oral hygiene routines. I will provide oral care instructions depending on the client's needs.
Many people are not aware that it is necessary to remove dentures nightly. Oral tissues need a chance to breath. Dentures need to be soaked overnight and thoroughly brushed with a denture brush and water. Avoid using toothpastes as they can be abrasive and scratch the denture.
As part of the assessment I will assess the fit of the denture, address if client is having problems chewing and look for changes in the oral cavity. Denture labeling is also part of my service. Referrals provided to denturist or dentist as needed.
I will develop a homecare program for both the client and caregivers and recommend products to keep dentures clean and in place.
Referrals as necessary to dentist or denturist
In-services for staff at long term facilities and seniors residences can be arranged.
